Wood guide

Local wood types

We enjoy working with a variety of timbers in our furniture projects, from well-known species to rarer beauties, sourcing locally when possible. Each piece is completely unique, revealing the story of its former life as a tree.

Wood sourcing

We source timber from a range of sources, enjoying working with our clients to find the perfect wood for their project.

Favouring local timber, we often work with wood from trees that have fallen naturally or have been felled due to urban development or disease. It gives us great pleasure to transform this material, which would otherwise be used as firewood or biomass fuel, into finely-crafted furniture that will be cherished for years to come. Not only is this the most sustainable option, but it often has more character than imported wood that's been grown for commercial purposes.

We also sometimes used reclaimed wood, such as mooring posts or railway sleepers, which have a unique history.

We celebrate what others might see as 'imperfections' in our work, seeing beauty in the cracks, knots and shakes which reveal the story of the timber.

When working on bigger projects, we occasionally use imported FSC certified timber, from forests that are managed in a way that preserves biological diversity and benefits the lives of local people and workers.
